I . The Lobby
The entrance to the lobby would be modeled after Hadrian's Gate in Athens
Emergency lighting is brought back to the shuttle and the opposite door slowly opens. Guests proceed out of the shuttle into the darkly lit docking bay. Captain Thaddeus is waiting for the team.
THADDUES: “Well the shuttles hammered, we’re going to have to use another one when we’re done here. Follow me.”
Thaddeus gathers the team and they head towards the lobby entrance.
THADDUES: “No welcome party, typical Orcus Corp.”
The place is eerily quiet save for a few random clanking sounds that lets us know that we certainly are not alone on the station. An ominous sign above the lobby entrance reads “Welcome to Terminus IV – The edge of the galaxy is the centre of discovery” This would look rather impressive if certain letters weren’t buzzing and fading in and out. The entrance to the lobby is modelled after Hadrian’s Gate in Athens.
Once through the door we reach a deserted lobby, a clean and neatly organised room boasting roman style columns and a statue of the Roman God Terminus – protector of boundary markers. A screen is also present in the room, it isn’t working. Red emergency lighting means that the room is dimly lit and deathly silent. The random clanking sounds remain however.
“Main power to the lobby is out. There’s going to be an Auxiliary power box somewhere in the room. Fan out and look for it”.
The team are instructed by the captain to search the environment for the panel box to hack the controls. Guests explore the room searching for the panel. The box will be hidden behind one of three or four partially closed panels that a guest can slide open once they find it. If no one finds it after a certain time then the actor playing the Captain finds it and ‘hacks’ the controls, continuing the scene. So not really a ‘challenge’ but a certain degree of guest interaction. (Note. For repeatability the control panel can be moved to different locations in the room on different days to keep it fresh for repeat guests) The original challenge was for member of the team to Hack into the door (this challenge would involve matching correct symbols to one another on a touch screen) to the lobby area. I have however changed this to a more general task for all guests to take part in. Guests are also given a chance to explore the scenery and take in the theming. Certain areas/props in the room will be interactive which, if touched will set off a sound effect or a burst of air to startle the guest touching it. Examples include a blast of air from a nearby vent, a monitor suddenly showing static with a loud noise or a bang behind a door or wall.

The lobby would feature Roman inspired architecture.
Once this is done, lighting is restored showing the lavish decor of the entrance to the station, including a roman mural on the ceiling. The screen in the centre boots up. An Orcus Corp PR video boots up welcoming guests to the station. The video is hosted by none other than Orcus CEO Hadrian Wells.
HADRIAN: “Since Orcus Corp’s humble beginnings in the early 21st century, we have always been about pushing boundaries. Boundaries in technology, boundaries in science, and the boundaries of our very existence. The great Roman God Terminus, was the marker of such boundaries. And here in the far reaches of space, Orcus Corp will push these limits to unimaginable lengths.
My name is Hadrian Wells, and I welcome you to the periphery of our very existence in the Universe. Welcome to Terminus IV.”
The screen fades out to the Orcus Corp logo: Orcus Corp. Searching for the future that you deserve.
THADDEUS: “Cute, now let’s get power back to the rest of the station and locate the crew. And have ourselves a chat with Minerva. Follow me.“

I I . Restoring the Power
One of my naff early scribbles for the Atrocious.
Thaddeus leads the team through a door marked ‘Maintenance’. Guests move through a tight, darkly lit corridor lined with pipes. An environmental scare in the form of a blast of air from one of the pipes catches Guests off guard. The only other noise is a few random clankings. Almost as if something is shuffling around in a nearby room somewhere. Guests eventually reach a square room, the entrance is marked ‘Generation: Sub router room’.
Compared to the lavish lobby this room feels dirty and not very well looked after. A large monitor screen lines one of the walls with a small control console facing it.
THADDEUS: ” Aright, let’s find out where the hell everyone is then”
Thaddeus stands at the console and begins to work.
THADDEUS: “Okay, patching in to Minerva now. You awake sweetheart?”
The screen bursts into life. Coding rushes past the monitor and eventually a face begins to emerge onto the screen. The face of a woman. A glitch occurs every so often causing the face to distort briefly, but her features are clear as day.

A quick sketch of Minerva.
MINERVA: “Good morning Captain. How are you today?”
THADDEUS: “Not the Captain I’m afraid.”
MINERVA: “Vocal pattern not recognised, please identify.”
THADDEUS: “This is Lieutenant Thaddeus of the ACC Salvation. We are here to respond to the distress signal sent one standard Earth week ago. Where is the Captain”.
MINERVA: “I am unable to locate the Captain whilst the power is down for the rest of the station.”
THADDEUS: “And the rest of the crew?”
MINERVA: “I am detecting no other human life in this section of the station besides your crew.”
THADDEUS: “You don’t say. Minerva, update me on the situation from the last standard week. What has happened here?”
Minerva remains silent.
THADDEUS: “Minerva! Run me a report on the last week. I need access to the bridge log, now.”
Minerva pauses for a moment. Almost seeming unsure, an uncertainty that seems strange from a computer programme.
MINERVA: “I am unable to complete command without complete power restoration to the rest of Terminus IV.
THADDEUS:” Fine. Then reboot power to the rest of the station.”
MINERVA: “My pleasure.”
Minerva’s face is replaced on screen by command code. Still being interrupted every so often by static.
MINERVA: “Power restored to sectors 1, 3 and 4. Levels 2 and Sublevels 3,5,6 unable to restore from here.
THADDEUS: “I guess we have our work cut out for us then. Minerva, where is the captain”
MINERVA:”Expired.”
THADDEUS: “What did you just say?”
Before Minerva can answer, we hear noises outside. Something is scratching around just outside the room. The sounds come from both the ceiling and the wall.
THADDEUS: “What? Minerva, are there crew members outside of the room.”
MINERVA: “I can assure you that there are no crew members in our immediate surroundings Lieutenant. Only the Atrocious are here now.”
THADDEUS: “The what?”
THADDEUS: “Not the Captain I’m afraid.”

THADDEUS: “The what?”
A character from a Spider-Man comic book provided some inspiration for creature design.
Suddenly a large crunching sound occurs which is followed by the sound of a generator powering down. The lights go out in the room leaving guests and Thaddeus in darkness.
THADDEUS:”Damn, we lost power again. Minerva, restore power.”
No reply.
THADDEUS:” Minerva!”
The replying sound is not Minerva, but a hideous shrieking noise and more banging outside.
THADDEUS: “Did you hear that?”
Silence. Guests can only hear their own breathing. Silence for what seems like a lifetime but infact only lasts about 15 seconds. Minerva’s voice breaks the silence.
MINERVA:”I would vacate this section of the station if I were you”.
A loud crashing noise is heard, and a very quiet sound. It almost sounds like some kind of animal.
THADDEUS: “There’s something in the room with us. I’m restoring backup power.”
The noise of the generator firing up is greeted with a loud crash. A very faint red light illuminates the room just enough for guests to see that there is something in the room with them, something not human. An alien creature begins to approach guests making a shrieking noise. The red light keeps diming in and out, leaving the whole room in complete darkness at intermittent moments.
THADDEUS: “What the hell is that?! Get behind me”
Thaddeus un-holsters what looks like some kind of weapon, a futuristic nail gun of some kind. He fires at the creature.
THADDEUS: “Get out of this room, we are leaving!”
Guests leave the room with Thaddeus right behind them. He locks the creature in the room behind him

Show Control Notes
This is a pretty straight forward scene from a show control point of view. This whole scene would be controlled using Scripted show control. Once guests are in the room the actor can control the show with the console – disguised as the control console for Minerva. The Programmable Logic Controller would do the rest, controlling the lighting, the audio/visual aspects such as the Minerva screen. The actor would just need to act along to Minerva. Timing his lines along with hers. The blackening out of the room and the restoring of the red lighting would be the actor in the ‘Atrocious’ suit to jump out and scare the heck out of guests. The dim lighting in the room would be used by putting a red gel filter over standard theatre lights.
I originally imagined Minerva to appear in the form of a mist screen - like Blackbeard & Davey Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean- in various parts of the attraction. I have since learned that this effect costs around $10,000 so I would opt for a simpler, more cost effective method – a large LCD screen. This scene was originally imagined as a challenge to reassemble power cables using a robotic arm (controlled by a joystick). This however would only be able to actually include one guest which may disappoint others. I instead opted to have this scene as a straight forward show piece with no guest challenge. The main purpose of the scene is to act as a ‘reveal’ for the creatures of the attraction.
i i i . Engineer 426
Guests have somehow stumbled upon one of the stations many crew quarters. This place looks very lived in. Peoples belongings strewn around their own little cabins, photos of loved ones back on earth. Some keen eyed guests will also spot out corporate signs and messages indicating what life is like on board a Terminus space station. As ‘lived in’ as this place looks, it is completely deserted. As we progress towards a door marked ‘Operations’ we see evidence of battle damage. Some plasma scorches on the wall and three words written in what looks like blood
“Don’t trust her”
THADDEUS: “Scorch marks, probably from plasma rounds. We’ve missed something big here, where the hell are the rest of the crew? That thing couldn’t have killed them all surely.”
The team moves into the operations bay. The rooms is once again deserted this one is lined with computer screens. Guests are told to line up behind a bar that faces two large LCD screens on the wall. The doors close and the scene begins.
THADDEUS: “We have to speak with Minerva again. Minerva, this is Lt. Thaddeus of the ACC Salvation. Minerva! Dammit.”
With that the screen on the right bursts into life. It seems to be a camera focusing on someone. The man’s face is concealed by a futuristic helmet.
ENGINEER 426: “Can anyone hear me? This is Engineer 426. In the maintenance vents in B section. If anyone is left alive please reply. This is Engineer 426.”
THADDEUS: “Well I’ll be damned. Need to patch into his channel, we can’t lose this guy!”
Thaddeus presses some buttons on one of the consoles.
THADDEUS: “This is Lt Thaddeus of the ACC Salvation. Alright, 426 you’ve got our attention. What in God’s name is going on here.”
ENGINEER 426: “A rescue ship? You’re a little late Lieutenant. Not sure that there’s too many people left here to rescue”.
THADDEUS:”We’ll take what we can get. What’s your location?”
ENGINEER 426: “I’ve been hiding out one of the engineering bays, got compromised so I’ve had to move into the ventilation system. I can make my way over to meet you. You’ll have to guide me though, I’ve lost my bearings a little bit.”
THADDEUS: “Alright, logging onto the ventilation schematics now, we’ll get you out of there 426”.
ENGINEER 426: “Much obliged”.
The second screen to the left boots up. The Orcus Corp logo is present at first. Code then crosses the screen followed by a schematic of the ventilation system.
THADDEUS: “pinpointing your location now.”
A green blip appears on the screen in the ventilation system labelled ‘426’.
THADDEUS: “Wow, you really are lost. Ok, you’re about 200 meters from Operations, past Medical. Looks like that’s your best bet. Make your way forward and take the first left.”
ENGINEER 426: “Ok forward and left”.
This continues for another minute or so. Thaddeus directs the on screen Engineer through the ventilation system whilst we watch his position on the schematic move in time with the view of what the engineer is seeing on the other screen.
Things seem to be going well, until a red blip appears on the screen, its label is ‘unknown’.
THADDEUS: “Hold on, we’ve got a problem”.
ENGINEER 426:”Yeah, there’s a lot of problems around here in case you didn’t notice”.
THADDEUS: “Shut up and listen, you’re not alone in there. I’m picking up another signal, I don’t think it’s human. I’m going to guide you out but you have to do exactly as I say.”
ENGINEER 426: “No complaints here”.
Thaddeus continues to give directions out of the ventilation shaft. His green blip is shown moving through the system whilst the red blip seems to be getting closer to his location. If that wasn’t bad enough, another ‘unknown’ blip appears in his sector.
THADDEUS:” 426? We have another unknown signal in your area, they both know you’re in there and they are heading your way.”
426: “Just get me the hell out of here Lt.”
Thaddeus continues to guide, and 426 continues to follow his orders. The red blips are getting even closer now. The tension in the room is heightened by a tense soundtrack. The red blips converge on 426’s location. He stops in the vents and on his camera we can see a shadow of a creature ahead of him.
THADDEUS: “Don’t make a move. They’re right on you. Wait, I think I can patch into the system and get their attention elsewhere. Wait for it.”
A sharp hissing sound is heard. Steam is seen in the shadow ahead of 426 and the creature makes a hissing sound. The moving map shows the two red blips to be moving away from 426.
THADDEUS: ” That’s it, theyre moving away. You’ve got a clear path to Operations 426, we’ll meet you there.”
426:”Good save, thanks. See you there”.
His screen goes blank. The moving map shows him moving towards medical and then also goes blank.
THADDEUS:”That was too close. Right, let’s go meet our new friend shall we?”
With that rustlings are heard around the room, we can hear creatures moving in the vents around the room. The lights cut out.
THADDEUS: “Don’t make a sound”.
Seconds pass which feel like hours in this dark. The lights return.
THADDEUS: “That was too close, follow me and lets mo…”
With that, a creature breaks in through the wall behind Thaddeus. A light strobe and shrieking sound add to the surprise. The creature grabs Thaddeus and pulls him into the hole. Just before he fully vanishes, he barks one last order.
THADDEUS: “Get to Med Lab. You’ve still got a job to do!”
Thaddeus is taken. The door towards Med lab is open. Guests move on.
“Don’t trust her”

Show Control and Engineering
Battle damage and creepy messages, add to the mystery atmosphere
As this scene is heavily scripted and relies heavily on the Actor playing along to the audio and visual cues in the scene, this would be done using Scripted Show Control. The actor portraying Thaddeus would have the power to begin the show once the doors are closed. All he would then have to do is play along with the scene, timing his lines to match with the pre recorded spiel (in a similar fashion to the now demolished Jaws attraction at Universal Orlando).. He will be backed up against a wall at the end for when he is taken by the creature, who would be a costumed actor hiding in a gap just behind him. The moving map would be timed to run alongside the pre recorded footage of the engineer in the vent system in perfect synchronisation. The screens themselves would once again be futuristically themed LCD screens. Strategically placed hidden speakers would provide the audio of the action on screen, the movement sounds from outside the room and for the creature attack itself. All in all this is a tightly scripted show scene. This is a scripted scene designed to build tension with the actor playing ‘Capt. Thaddeus’ talking to a 'survivor' (on a pre recorded video) directing him. A moving map shown on wall to complement the action. Originally guests actions would determine whether the survivor dies or not. (this would be done by either verbally giving directions or on a touch screen system). If the character survived – He would tell the team to move on to the next area. If the team failed in guiding him safely, they will see a video/hear audio of his demise. (he will still shout at them to move on before being eaten!) I decided that this would be too complicated for a group (of potential strangers) to carry out and went for another tense scripted scene.
